Why Flexibility Matters During an Eczema Flare

//

Hi, I'm Veronica, Scrachee's founder.

Recently, my son's eczema flared up again. It wasn't a big flare, but it was enough to bring back a lot of memories. His skin was pink, shiny, and then he told me something I wasn't expecting.

"Mom, the cream is stinging."

A few years ago, I probably would've panicked. I would've thought I was doing something wrong, that I had to start all over again, or that somehow we were moving backwards. But this time, I did something different.

I listened.

Because one of the biggest things our eczema journey has taught me is that skin changes. And when skin changes, your routine can change too. Not every stage of an eczema flare needs the same kind of support. Sometimes eczema-prone skin needs more hydration. Sometimes it needs more protection. Some days, a cream feels amazing. Other days, a balm is exactly what the skin is asking for.

So we adjusted.

Without fear.

Without thinking we had somehow failed.

We simply responded to what his skin needed that day.

As I watched his skin slowly become less inflamed, begin to dry, flake, and finally feel more comfortable again, I realized something. I think so many of us spend our time searching for the perfect eczema routine, as if there's one combination of products, foods, or habits that should never have to change.

But our bodies don't work that way.

The seasons change.

Stress changes.

Hormones change.

Our environment changes.

Our skin changes.

And we can change with it.

One thing I've learned is that eczema isn't always the same from week to week. Weather, pollen, stress, and everyday life can all affect how the skin feels. That's why I've stopped expecting one routine to work exactly the same every single day. That doesn't mean you're starting over. It doesn't mean everything you've done stopped working. It simply means you're learning to listen.

Honestly, I think that's one of the greatest lessons eczema has taught me.

Flexibility isn't a lack of discipline.

It's part of the process.

As moms, we put so much pressure on ourselves to get everything right. To find the perfect routine. To never make a mistake. But healing with eczema isn't about following the exact same plan every single day. It's about paying attention, adjusting when needed, and giving your body what it needs today, not what it needed last month.

That mindset has changed everything for our family.

We still have eczema flare-ups.

We still have days where we need to pivot.

But now I don't see those moments as failure. I see them as reminders to slow down, listen, and respond with intention.

Maybe that's what healing with eczema really looks like.

Not perfection.

Not having every answer.

Just learning to listen, adapt, and support your skin one day at a time.

With love,

Veronica
