Your Eczema Triggers Guide: Easy Identification Tips

One of the most complicated things about dealing with eczema is knowing what triggers it.

When I started treating my son's eczema I wanted to find a list that would tell me exactly what was causing his flares, I was willing to eliminate them all so that his skin would improve.

Unfortunately, everyone with eczema has different triggers, my son's eczema may be triggered by wool clothing, but wool clothing doesn't do anything to your skin. That complicates things and leaves you with all the responsibility of figuring out what your eczema triggers are.

That is very scary because it is something that is not accomplished in one day. It took me many months to identify my son's triggers, but today I can say that I know 95% of them, and I want to share with you what I did to identify them.

Step 1

Test for allergies 🗒️

It is important that you do allergy testing to find out if you have allergies, most people with eczema suffer from allergies and these worsen this skin condition.

Ideally, avoid allergens so that you keep flare-ups under control.

Step 2

Look for common eczema triggers 🥖

While it's true that not everyone has the same triggers there are common triggers you can start testing for.

Here are some of them: synthetic fabrics such as polyester, dust mites, pollen, temperature changes (too hot or too cold), dry skin, ingredients in products that are irritating such as fragrances, foods such as milk, eggs, dairy and seafood, detergents, stress, hormonal changes, excessive sweating, etc.

Having these common triggers, you can now start to test for what does and does not trigger your eczema.

Step 3

Keep a journal and write everything down ✍🏽

I used to write down everything my son did during the day, that included the meals, the products I used on him and even the places we went. That allowed me to keep track of all the possible things he might have come in contact with.

With all the activities we did during the day, it was easy to forget certain things, so having an eczema diary is great for identifying any possible triggers.

Step 4

Be patient 🧘🏽‍♀️

I understand that this process can be hard, but you need to trust the process. You don't have to push yourself, identifying eczema triggers takes time but with each one you find, you will be one step closer to finding relief for you or your child's skin.

I hope this info helps you and remember that you can count on us to support you in your eczema journey.
